Ageless quote - 'The circular economy - late-life careers are a wise reuse of the talents, skills, and knowledge developed over lifetimes of work and inquiry.'

Image
"Circular economy business models keep products, equipment, and infrastructure in use for longer, increasing the value of these resources. Principles that underpin circular economy thinking include reducing waste and finding innovative ways to repair, recycle, and reuse materials by returning them to the value chain. This is an intrinsically attractive strategy and business model for ageless entrepreneurs. One could even make the case for considering new, late-life careers as a wise reuse of the talents, skills, and knowledge developed over lifetimes of work and inquiry." Rick Terrien ### From: Starting Up Smarter. Why Founders Over 50 Build Better Companies. Dr. Mary J. Cronin. This quote is from my chapter which concluded this great book. Ageless quote - 'Founders in the second half of life will find abundant overlap of purpose with younger entrepreneurs. This is a unique time in our cultural and commercial history where these kinds of multigenerational partnerships can be formed around shared causes.'

Image
"Young and old alike can be innovation partners in this new world. While older entrepreneurs have lifetimes of experience and networks to share for the common good, young people have been born into a world where existential threats are a clear and present danger. Young people do not have the luxury of ‘kicking the problems down the road’. They feel their timelines for finding solutions are shrinking. There has always been a strong sense of urgency in younger generations to make change happen quickly, but this movement is being magnified by the multiple system failures endemic in the world, including climate change, food systems failures, and rampant pollution endangering health and life. Founders in the second half of life will find abundant overlap of purpose with younger entrepreneurs. This is a unique time in our cultural and commercial history where these kinds of multigenerational partnerships can be formed around shared causes. Mentoring can and should be multidirecti

Ageless quote - 'Instead of just asking "Why me?" ask yourself these questions to determine if becoming an entrepreneur after you retire from your job is a smart move for you.'

"Why is an ageless startup right for you? When you consider your options, you’ll likely see that the question perhaps shouldn’t be “Why me?” but rather “Why not me?” Consider this: You have skills and knowledge that have taken most of a lifetime to accumulate. You have the time to build a new career slowly and thoughtfully that can reflect the values you want to leave for those who follow. You have networks of friends, colleagues and connections and that are unique in history. You have the passion to make a difference and time enough on the planet to not care what others think about you." Ageless quote - 'To reap a so-called longevity dividend you need to make sure that you set up the infrastructure to make that possible' - The Economist

Image
This is a great new quote from The Economist in support of the longevity infrastructure we're building at the CAE. Unlocking the potential of older years The Economist. Dec. 21, 2021 (6:04) “In the rich world 90% of people will now reach their 65th birthday and most of them will have plenty of healthy years ahead of them. Encouraging people to make use of these healthy years could unlock economic potential that’s being lost in retirement. To make the most of this increasing life expectancy, to reap a so-called longevity dividend you need to make sure that you set up the infrastructure to make that possible . More flexible ways of tapping into, say your pension savings, to employers taking a more open-minded approach.” (6:40) Emphasis added Youtube link : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hJCr5WJapm8

Ageless quote - 'I chose to see them more as obstacles to overcome, rather than mistakes.' - Martha Davis Kipcak

Are there any mistake(s) you can share from your own current career? Every day should be an opportunity to discover and grow and correct whatever didn’t work before. There were definitely disappointments and gut punches and states of bewilderment. But I chose to see them more as obstacles to overcome, rather than mistakes. " Martha Davis Kipcak Ageless Startup. Ageless quote - 'Nothing is as exhausting as people who refuse to own any error, intentional or accidental. Own your shit.' - Martha Davis Kipcak

What is your best piece of advice you would share with someone in the second half of life considering entrepreneurship? Own your shit. "Nothing is as exhausting as people who refuse to own any error, intentional or accidental. Own your shit. People will respect you for it. And you can respect yourself. Work every day to maintain good emotional, spiritual and physical health. Cultivate curiosity and tenacity and wonder. Listen more. Talk less. Ageless quote - A path to liberation in the later years of your life.

"When you ask yourself some simple questions about where you’ll be working at 60 or 65, don’t see work as a burden to live through. See it as a path to liberation in the later years of your life." Ageless quote - 'Requires the entrepreneur be prepared with sustainable solutions.'

Ageless quote - It’s crucial to build a professional practice

"You can enter any part of our economy at a small scale that matches your goals and aspirations. Ageless quote - 'Planning is an exercise in looking into yourself to determine what you think is worth pursuing'

"Planning isn’t a mystical process of divining the future. Ageless quote - The 10-10-10 rule

"Once you solidify your plan, you can consider the 10-10-10 rule: Be able to describe your enterprise in 10 seconds. Then, be able to present your concept in 10 screens. Then, be able to provide a deep dive into your business to customers and stakeholders in 10 minutes." Rick Terrien Ageless Startup. Start a Business at Any Age. Page 71

Rick, a long-term entrepreneur and author, shares how he has dedicated his time to assisting others with launching a business in their second half of life. Gathering Ageless interviews, articles, podcast, and news. - Late 2021

I am using this post to gather media links since the book was published and we launched the Center for Ageless Entrepreneurs. Older workers driving the labor shortage. Leaving for better options.

Image
In my opinion, older workers are done undervaluing themselves. Good article from CNN Business. The data that shows Boomers are to blame for the labor shortage “Last month, there were 3.6 million more Americans who had left the labor force and said they didn't want a job compared with November 2019. A whopping 90% of them were over 55.” Many in our age group will want to continue contributing. We can create social enterprises, for-profits and non-profits. The Center for Ageless Entrepreneurs provides an infrastructure for these new ageless entrepreneurs to work together. Link to CNN Story. 12-18-2021

Starting Up Smarter - my chapter conclusion

Image
"Entrepreneurs over fifty represent a vast, largely untapped global resource. People with decades of experience bring knowledge, networks, and know-how to the table. In the U.S. there are about 100 million people between forty-five and sixty-five. Pre-pandemic surveys indicated about 25% wanted to launch their own small enterprise. That’s twenty-five million potential startups in the queue. With twenty-five million new entrepreneurs ready to contribute creative solutions where needed, with thirty years of experience each, that’s 750 million years of human experience ready to launch sustainable organizations for their own success and that of the planet" ### From: Starting Up Smarter. Thank you for the great conversation Jon! A quote from me in response to a question: “That’s one of the reasons we’re putting together the Center for Ageless Entrepreneurs. Podcast interview - Interstellar Business Show. The enormous, overlooked talent pool.

Image
I had a wonderful conversation recently with Andrew Bull, host of the Interstellar Business Show. Andrew and Interstellar Way of Life focus on helping technology companies elevate culture and team performance. While our ageless approach is meant for every industry and type of work, there is a specific need with technology companies to diversify their workforces to insure the right stories are told, and that startup and growth cultures include relevant connections to industry knowledge and networks. Rick Terrien: "I would like to share the idea that there is an enormous talent pool that's in the second half of life that have built companies, that have built industries, that have built markets - that know the networks, and know the comings and goings of industries. And yet they're overlooked as a source of talent. These are people in the second half of life." Link to the full podcast Audio clip from the interview.

Podcast interview - ValueVerse

Here is a great new podcast conversation about ageless entrepreneurship - hosted by Kawan at ValueVerse. Kawan: "Starting a business, becoming an entrepreneur, or being your own boss has most of us convinced that it’s not the wisest career choice in our lives. Our guest today aims to not sugar coat the long journey to entrepreneurship but rather fuel determined individuals with the right information as a catalyst for change." Rick: “I think that starting an idea - in a smart manner - means starting in a network and finding tribes for yourself that can help build out your ideas.” "Maybe the most important thing of all is to start right now." Thanks for a great conversation Kawan! Link to the full ValueVerse podcast

Great quote - Abby Miller Levy - Primetime Partners.

Image
A new friend led me to an interview with Alan Patricof and Abby Miller Levy at Primetime Partners. Primetime Partners is a venture fund focusing on the future of how we age. Excellent interview. Links below. The Abby Miller Levy quote below is great. I use it in presentations.... an excellent idea for building new, more effective networks to empower ageless entrepreneurs. Ms. Levy was being asked about how their fund would advise new companies entering longevity focused markets... "I think I can guess what Alan would say, so I’m going to jump in here… I think what we would say – and this isn’t just because it’s consistent with our brand and our positioning – Go find an experienced professional who has been in the industry – for 20 – 30 years – of the industry you’re starting your startup in. Go find a cofounder who has that experience, that network, the understanding – and frankly the relevancy to the end user that looks like them. And go co-design a busin

Richard Branson advice to young entrepreneurs - carry a notebook

Image
For many decades I have followed this timeless advice - carry a notebook and use it. Following Richard Branson's successful space flight, his advice to young entrepreneurs - carry a notebook "At a news conference afterward, he had this advice for budding entrepreneurs: Every time we start a new company, I will immerse myself and experience it. I will have a notebook, and this is something you kids should think about. ... I've written down 30 or 40 little things that will make the next experience for the next person who goes to space with us that much better." Axios 7-12-21

New podcast interview - Entrepreneurs Over 40

Image
I enjoyed a recent conversation with Greg Mills on his podcast 'Entrepreneurs Over 40'. Entrepreneurs Over 40 features inspiring stories by Entrepreneurs talking about the businesses that they created and the Side Hustles that they launched. In it we cover their motivation, the tools and tactics that they used to develop their business as well as their best and worst of days. These were some of the takeaways from our conversation: • The majority of startups are done by people 45 and older. • One of the biggest impediments to entrepreneurship is not knowing an entrepreneur to model after or learn from. • In school we were taught that it was scary to start your own business. Today it is much scarier not to. • There has never been a better time to start a one person business than right now...It does take a while to build up your networks of fellow experts so get in the game now. • There is room to advise people in just about any subject. Thanks

The value of peer-to-peer networks

Image
We're re-launching our Pittsburgh Food and Beverage (FaB) network web site.  The FaB network has become a great model for ageless entrepreneurship principles...  Start small.  Start smart.  Start right now. Pittsburgh FaB has been a labor of love since I began traveling to Pennsylvania to help launch Food21 and grow this network in 2018.  We now have over 90 regional food businesses and over 85 support organizations in our Pittsburgh FaB network.  We are just now launching an exciting new culinary category.     My guidance has always been that organizations like FaB should grow as ground-up, peer-to-peer business development networks.  It's what I advocate for in the book and at our new Center for Ageless Entrepreneurs  I'm looking forward to helping grow this model.

Entrepreneurship in the second half of life. My conversation with the Bloom community.

Image
I had a wonderful conversation with the Bloom community this week. I love the description Bloom uses on their web site: "Why retire when you can bloom? Join a community of adults 50+ learning, connecting and redefining a new phase of life." I met many new friends and opened up new conversations with the Bloom community. What a great day! The Bloom team sent some of the responses they got from my presentation: • "I liked that Rick recognized and is creating the missing bridge that we need as potential and/or existing entrepreneurs. We do not all have degrees nor do we all fit in the familiar list of businesses. I personally appreciate his warmth, knowledge and encouragement." - Deborah C. • "I caught your session on Bloom. This organization is exactly what I've been looking for." - Daryl W. • "A chance to talk with so many other people my age, as the other entrepreneur groups I talk with all seem young." - Sha

Piano top life preservers - Bucky Fuller

As the world hopefully emerges from the pandemic, we have the opportunity to rebuild systems that regenerate life rather than deplete it.  Ageless entrepreneurs can be leaders in this movement. "I am enthusiastic over humanity's extraordinary and sometimes very timely ingenuity.  If you are in a shipwreck and all the boats are gone, a piano top buoyant enough to keep you afloat that comes along makes a fortuitous life preserver.  But this is not to say that the best way to design a life preserver is in the form of a piano top.  I think we are clinging to a great many piano tops in accepting yesterday's fortuitous contrivings as constituting the only means of solving a given problem." - Buckminster 'Bucky' Fuller Buckminster Fuller Institute:  https://www.bfi.org/

Boston: The Silicon Valley of longevity?

Image
Two of my favorite quotes below, with a link to the full article. Boston: the Silicon Valley of longevity? An older population can serve as the hub for a new kind of innovation cluster. February 15, 2021.      By Joe Coughlin and Luke Yoquinto       “In the United States, the economic impact of older adults is already remarkable. Americans aged 50 and up account for just 35 percent of the US population, but, according to the AARP, they controlled 83 percent of all household wealth as of 2018, and were responsible for 56 cents of every dollar of consumer spending — a figure expected to rise to 61 cents by 2050. Their unpaid activities, including elder care, child care, and volunteerism, add another $745 billion worth of production to the US economy. Their labor force participation, too, continues to rise, part of a long-term trend that started in the 1980s. But older people’s potential economic activity only begins with what they’re up to now. Tools to address their future needs, wants,

I love the title we've posted for this presentation: A field guide to launching a startup where your age is an asset! “There has never been a better time to start your own business, but taking that leap of faith can seem like a daunting risk rather than an exciting new venture. But here’s the truth: Your community needs you. The world needs you. You have time to make a difference, and you have the experience, resilience, and drive to make it. " We'll discuss Rick's advice on how you can go from being an employee to an entrepreneur, or from an empty-nester to a business owner. There is no cost to attend.  Hope you can join us! It is not a simple matter of ramping up existing companies to provide new products and seervices.  Exiting companies can surely innovate.  But given current circumstances with small businesses reeling, we can't rely on our existing businesses exclusively. We need hundreds of thousands of new small businesses

I had a great 2020 discussion with Leah and Matt Rafferty, hosts of The Author Inside You Podcast. Leah and Matt just sent word that our conversation about ageless entrepreneurship was the most downloaded episode of The Author Inside You for 2020! The title of this podcast was How to Work with a Professional Publisher.   I loved working with my professional publishing team at Entrepreneur, and would recommend their services to anyone, especially - but not limited to - my wonderful editor Jen Dorsey.  I'm honored by the shout-out and look forward to listening to more valuable information from The Author Inside you.  Thanks, Leah and Matt! Quote from this interview: "In this day and age... I posit that it's scarier NOT to have your own business."
